The Power of Paint

Breakfast Room comes to life.

The breakfast room in our new house is long, narrow,
and extends off the kitchen towards the back of the house.

While keeping the main rooms of the house white for that open, expansive feel,
I wanted to add some drama to this back room with paint.

To ensure proper coverage, I used a medium gray primer.

We painted this room ourselves and used blue painters tape on the ceiling to get that straight, crisp line.
It's worth the extra effort.

I picked a dark teal color for that added drama.
The fun part about designing my own house is I can take risks.

My inspiration for the color was this beautiful glass bowl.

 I love the result!

The artwork really pops off this dark color.

It's actually a cozy, comfortable color, and really updates this room.
Still to come: new light, drapes, area rug, and hardwood floors.

The reveal!
The dark teal (color: Riverway) really works in with the warm grey of the kitchen.
The key is contrast for good design... keep that in mind.
Would you paint a room in your house with such a dark color?
Please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the update so far.

Warmly,

Simple Solution DIY

What to do with that big white wall?

It was a bit of a challenge to add artwork to this long wall.

I wanted to use this multi-media artwork for the space.

It's all about size and scale, and this painting was lost on the expansive wall.

With a few common items, I created a simple solution to this problem.

I measured off a section about one foot on each side of the painting.

I then used the washer and thread to create a straight line by taping it at the top of the wall and letting it hang down to the bottom.
I placed pencil marks down along the string from top to bottom.
I then connected the dots for that perfect straight line.

I selected the right paint color to accent the space.

I then taped out the section to be painted.

The result - the perfect accent wall to balance the painting.

The painted section gives a much needed break to the long white space.

It also helps to define the space and separate it from the other artwork hanging along the same wall.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about this post.

HARMONY IN THE HOME

Think "harmony" for your home.
Especially in the midst of winter on the East coast.
Let's think warm with tropical breezes right about now!

Is it time to repaint?
Is it time to clean-out?
Is it time to freshen up your home?

Here are a few of my favorite paint colors that may add that soothing tropical feel.
Will they work for your room?

LOOK WHAT'S COOKIN'

Well here's the latest new home update.
Boring builder kitchen transformed to an open concept (think NYC loft) inspired kitchen!
There's still plenty to do but this is the first reveal.

In the beginning...

In the process...

Before shelves...

We still needed more storage and I wanted to keep the concept open.

I always tend to add a *little* of the unexpected in my interior designs.
I fell in love with this orange stove!
It was one of my inspirations for this kitchen design... and no, it's not little :)
 Just beautiful craftsmanship.

I just love the uniqueness of the orange color.
Are you bold enough to put a bright orange stove in your kitchen?

The new drop-down, stand-alone hood was a major feature that had to be added to this kitchen.

The new hood and stove go perfectly together.

 Now the needed accessories.

I chose these metal and wood stools for their industrial look.
I wanted the white to pop from the island's gray color.

I really liked the natural element that the wood brings to the stools.
It adds a softness to the industrial feel.

Adding another small pop of color to the walls brings in needed balance.
We had this amazing painting from a long-time artist friend.
It goes to show that you can incorporate items that you already have when you redesign your spaces.

Adding this new George Nelson inspired clock added a bit of a vintage look.
The stainless steel works with the appliances and you can't go wrong adding a retro piece to your home.

As you can see with the paint swatches still on the cabinets that we have much to do.
The next step is to paint the cabinets, add hardware, and find the perfect pendant lights.
The future plan is to also replace the existing countertops with quartz.

I hope you like the transformation as much as I do.
I know that a modern interior may not be everyones taste, but don't be afraid to think outside of the box.

Stay tuned for more upgrades coming soon.
Home renovations can take time and money.
If it's time to renovate or redecorate your home, remember that you can do it a bit at a time.
There are no rules that say you must do all the renovations at once.
If you have the funds and the time to do that, then by all means.  I just want you to know that there are always options. Sometimes you have to do it a step at a time and the results will still be fabulous!

Thank you for joining me on my journey!
